Is It Possible to Balance the Economy and Environment?
We often hear industry and political leaders talk about how we need to balance the economy with the environment. The thinking goes something like this: environmental destruction is necessary to earn a living and make the things we need. Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant explores how we can approach the economy and the environment differently.
Based on the book by Jenny Price.

Our Understanding of Floods is ALL Wrong

First, we journey to New York, to visit Hoboken, New Jersey, and Hollis, Queens, two communities facing different flood challenges. Then, we explore First Street's groundbreaking new risk map, pinpointing high-risk are...
How Big Business Broke Recycling (And Blamed You)
Просмотров 104 тыс.День назад
Recycling has been the gold standard for fighting pollution for decades. But most plastics can’t be recycled and the companies that push for recycling are the ones often generating the most emissions and waste in the first place. Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant looks at how we have been told to “reduce, reuse, recycle” to shift the responsibility from companies to the individual. Based on the book by Jenny ...

Carbon Offsets Don't Work. Here's Why
Просмотров 29 тыс.14 дней назад
Individuals, companies and governments “offset” carbon emissions by paying to plant trees or fund solar panels in one place, so they can emit them elsewhere. Carbon credits are exchanged in the open market with the idea that carbon prices will go up - forcing companies to emit less. Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant looks at why carbon offsets may not solve the climate crisis. Based on the book by Jenny Price...
You Can't Shop Your Way Out of Climate Change
Просмотров 92 тыс.21 день назад
We have seen a boom in “eco-friendly” products marketed to consumers’ concerns about the impact of the stuff we buy. But this "shop ‘til you drop” approach doesn’t solve the bigger issue: overconsumption and overproduction are the key drivers of pollution and climate change. Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant looks at how “greenwashed” products might be doing more harm than good. Based on the book by Jenny Pri...

Does "Every Little Thing" REALLY Stop Climate Change?

Recycling, planting trees, and going vegan are just a handful of the many ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Why It's Time to Stop Saving the Planet*

We care about the planet. But what if it's time to stop "saving it"? Western cultures - and even some climate scientists and sustainability advocates - often share the idea that there is the “natural world” and the “human world.” The natural world is seen as pristine and untouched, while the human world is chaotic and ever changing. But all living things change the world around them in order to...

AFAIK, sweres systems aren't used for pluvial water drainage. It's pluvial water networks that do that. The statement is probably wrong in another way: they are not outdated - rainfall is stronger and more concentrated in time (it rains a lot in a short period of time). In Brazil there were underground channels built in the 1970s and 80s that were designed with 5 times the predicted capacity for 50 years later - and they have been overflowing often only 20-30 years later. I know the US and the Biden administration is all about infrastructure but I believe reports like this propagate a wrong understanding to the public - that the problem isn't climate change but "outdated infrastructure". The world is large and not every country has the funds to the infrastructure works the US is doing - and, coincidently, these countries are the least responsible for climate change. edit: São Paulo city built the first water retention tank in the 1990s - and it's flooding.

I was born and raised in southwest Alabama. We had to take AL history in both 4th and 9th grades. Much of this was taught to us. After graduating high school, I went on a personal search for more information. While in college at UWA, I went fishing on the chalk cliffs in Epps. I studied the habitation and history of the black belt region. It may sound bad, but we were taught that the band across central Alabama wasn’t called the Black Belt solely because of the soil, but also because of the inhabitants of the area. It’s true that many slaves did not leave the area, mostly because they didn’t have the resources to travel. There was a large migration of black people to the north after the Civil War because of industry and jobs. Many black people, however, had no family ties in the north nor did they have money to get them and their families uprooted and moved.

Thinking about this makes me remember the city I grew up in - Midland Texas. We all joked about "The River Wadley" - one specific street, Wadley Avenue, consistently flooded every single time there was a thunderstorm. I was too young to understand then WHY the flooding happened, but Midland is smack in the middle of the desert! Annual precip was usually less than 12 inches I think. However, all that dry, dry land becomes hard as rock when it's dry for nine months straight... and that's why flash floods were always such a huge risk, everywhere in the city, even though the storm drains were HUGE. Where I am now there are lots of creeks and green, but the water table's pretty damn high and the soil is almost fifty-fifty clay/sand. The sand drains great, the clay doesn't, and it averages out to something that the city infrastructure can handle. Barely. As things get worse I expect that we'll see more and more flooding, and I hope like hell our city planners are paying attention to what's happening in far away places like NYC. We're nowhere near that built up obviously, this is Mississippi, everyone loves having green around them and there's quite a strong dedication to NOT paving over everything. But that doesn't mean we don't have problem areas, I can think of at LEAST two schools whose parking lots become lakes when it's a bad storm. I've heard about lots of materials science trying to develop permeable pavements and other things that will act more like sponges and allow better control of runoff, but I'm praying that such things become super cheap super quick.

It’s not about Climate Change, it’s about “Control”. I did the math. Per EPA, US total carbon emissions were 6.3x10^9 (billion) metric tons which equals 2.857x10^6 (million) lbs. (divide by 2205 as 1 metric ton = 2205 lbs). If the US has 228x10^9 (Billion) trees each consumed 48 lbs of carbon, then the total is 10.9x10^12 (TRILLION) lbs of carbon are removed by trees alone? So if we make 2.857x10^6 (million) lbs of carbon & trees removed 10.9x10^12 (TRILLION) lbs, what’s the problem??? The math don’t work!!! We’re not the problem, maybe it’s those countries that have been exempted from the Climate Change agenda??? Don’t we share the same air??? Doesn’t Equate!!!

I am getting tired of people minimizing individual contributions. If we get as many people as possible to make positive climate choices, we will a) be shifting the market for what is available and b) make that "individual" contribution proportion a lot bigger. Yes, putting the whole onus on individuals originated with fossil fuel companies and keeps focus on the larger structures, but that does not negate that large groups of individuals have a valid part to play.

Found a big bumblegal bumping on my dining room window and held out a card and she walked right onto it. Carried her onto some flower boxes and she grabbed onto those flowers for dear life and walked around and around like she was starving! Sticking her proboscis in every flower, covering her head in a pollen hat. Poor girl must have been exhausted and badly needed to refuel. At one point the heavy little thing was holding onto a very small pansy which dropped under her weight so I supported the flower petal beneath her. When she was done, she just crawled onto my fingertip, so I gave her a ride from flower to flower for a bit until she had enough energy to fly and go on her way. Lucky I found her on the window in time. The feeling of her gently holding my fingertip made my heart feel fuzzy just like a bumblebee. Amazing little creatures they are! ❤
